On May 15, 2008, His Holiness the Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa arrived in America, for the first time in his present incarnation. A few days later, on the auspicious occasion of Saka Dawa, the Karmapa returned to his North American seat at Karma Triyana Dharmachakra (KTD), in Woodstock, New York, which incidentally had been established by the Sixteenth Karmapa on Saka Dawa in 1976.

This first visit of the Seventeenth Karmapa filled hearts with limitless joy and the skies with magical rainbows. Many local people who were not present at KTD felt they received his blessings through the manifestation of these amazing rainbows. In order to express our immense appreciation to our most precious guru the Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa, KTD Publications, under the guidance of both the Karmapa and Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, produced this book commemorating the joy and magic of the Seventeenth Karmapa’s first visit to America.

  • My visit to America took place in May 2008 and looking through these photographs and the accompanying text has brought back so many joyful memories and impressions.–the Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje

  • We have a great opportunity to establish an unprecedented level of understanding among peoples and as a result, true peace and happiness in this world. This opportunity, which includes an opportunity to brighten our minds, comes from the appreciation of different cultures and languages.–the Seventeenth Karmapa, KTC New Jersey, 2008
